Say what you will about Dane Cook, but he got one thing right when he said that the only thing men want more than sex is to be involved in a heist. True words Dane, even if your stand-up material is atrocious.
Last week in Stockholm, Sweden a cash depot storing millions in cash was robbed in an early-morning raid.
The team rappelled into the building from the roof, then set off explosions to access the money. Once the cash was loaded into duffel bags they ascended up ropes to a helicopter waiting on the roof. All the while local police waited outside for a "commando unit" to show up. As soon as said backup arrived the helicopter took off. In an impressive show of planning the thieves also stopped an air pursuit by placing fake bombs around helipads in the area. They ditched the helicopter in a field outside the city and so far none have been caught.
It's thought that as many as 10 people were involved in the heist. Considering nobody was hurt and the money was fully insured....I approve. Hat tip to a well done bank job.
Finally, as Gawker so nicely pointed out, American's aren't really good at things like this anymore. In a post called "Americans Grow Ever Less Gangster" they bring up a few examples of the types of "high crime" so-called "gangsters" are pulling off here in the states.
My favorite is this one. Members of the Gambino crime family tried several times to burn down a Dunkin Donuts in Brooklyn using fireworks - with the goal to quickly collect a six-figure insurance claim. After several attempts the building was finally destroyed, but then it took 9 years to collect the insurance money which came out to a whopping $15,000. Everyone involved was arrested. Hardly the type of thing that inspired Goodfellas.
What's the moral of the story? Crime pays, but only in Europe.
